Automatic Transmission Repair: What You Need To Know

An automatic transmission uses fluid to connect the gear shafts and individual gears. When you put your foot on the accelerator, the engine speeds up and applies pressure to the fluid. This causes the gearbox to shift into first gear, then second gear, and so on. The same thing happens when you take your foot off the pedal – the pressure from the engine reduces, and so does the force pushing the transmission through its gears.

Automatic Transmission Repair is an important and necessary service for your car. Most automatic transmissions can be fixed by replacing the transmission fluid and filters, but some may also require other repairs.

How Does an Automatic Transmission Work?

An automatic transmission (AT) is a type of powertrain that allows a vehicle to move forward or backward with the help of gears. The transmission relies on the oil pressure to send the correct gear to the engine, which then sends power to the drive shaft.

When you drive your car, you’re actually using two different types of transmissions: a manual and an automatic. An automatic transmission uses gears to send power from the engine to the wheels. To work properly, your car needs four things: oil pressure, engine torque, and gear ratios. 

1) Oil Pressure – The Automatic Transmission depends on oil pressure to get it moving. If there isn't enough oil in the system, then the Automatic Transmission will not operate correctly and could even fail.

2) Engine Torque – The Automatic Transmission needs enough engine torque in order to operate correctly. If there isn't enough torque available, then your car will not go anywhere and might even have to be towed.

3) Gear Ratios – The Gear Ratios determine how fast each gear will shift. If these ratios are incorrect, then your Automatic Transmission won't be able to put the correct gear into your drive train and you'll end up spinning your tires.
